LOS ANGELES — Volunteers gathered Jan. 31 at the District headquarters to assemble Valentine's Day care packages and prepare them for mailing to co-workers currently deployed overseas.

Chief of Emergency Management Anne Hutton, who also coordinates these deployments, has been impressed with the community support.

"The Los Angeles District would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the many schools, church groups, Girl Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs ... everyone that submitted cards," said Hutton.

To personally thank everyone for their hard work, District Commander Col. Mark Toy recorded a videotaped message.

“Our Family Readiness Support Program sends care packages throughout the year to support our fellow Los Angeles District team members that are currently assisting in our overseas contingency operations,” said Toy. “Staff volunteers and community groups have been hard at work assembling these boxes full of homemade valentines and treats.”

Since 2002, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District has deployed more than 100 employees to Afghanistan and Iraq with 41 employees currently deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

“In line with the Los Angeles District motto, ‘Building Strong and Taking Care of People,’ these packages from home help raise morale and remind our staff that we appreciate the sacrifices that they are making,” Toy added.
